Wythenshawe Vets Over-35s are located in south the city and compete in the Cheshire-based Vets League Top Tier.

"Those people who turn up and watch are pleased and to make someone's moment if they see us competing there and to ask us questions - it's more like the pleasure of us having a place we can play, with structure of course."

Such is the squad depth at the club, he made his first game at defender.

"That's a bit different but then, I enjoy running and just go inside - I'm not defending that much," he said.

"I warn my centre-back 'I'm not hanging back' and that I'm just going to keep running.

"The running is what I'm looking for. It's good fun."

"I felt I was a little starstruck playing against him to be honest.

"Also Heskey came on and he's got over 60 England caps.

"Our side held our own for a solid 20 mins but then we had a player sent off and it was hard.

"Our group really haven't ceased chatting about it - I was calling my mother and brother on the journey home.

"The opponents were all really nice, shaking our hands after the match - it was like facing a group of normal fellas.

"Now we can't wait for the return match."
