In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
