The anticipation around the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
